Just like the hatchback, the Octavia Estate\u2019s engine line-up mirrors that of it\u2019s less expensive sibling. It features petrol, mild-hybrid and diesel offerings with either a six-speed manual with the least powerful petrol and diesel engines, while both outputs of the mild-hybrid equipped 1.5 e-Tec, the 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel, and the high-performance vRS come with a seven-speed DSG automatic as standard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps surprisingly, the most efficient petrol engine isn\u2019t the smaller of the two, but the larger 148bhp unit. This is thanks to the combination of a dual-clutch transmission and mild-hybrid technology (badged e-Tec), which helps deliver as much as 58.2mpg on the WLTP combined cycle, depending on your chosen trim level and wheel size. This setup\u2019s 48-volt starter generator helps save fuel by stopping the engine in traffic or when coasting, and delivers a small power boost when accelerating to reduce the amount of work the engine has to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest Kona Electric is bigger than before in every dimension than its predecessor, but its turning circle hasn\u2019t increased, remaining at 10.6 metres. The steering is light, and you can easily turn the wheel with one finger \u2013 although we obviously wouldn\u2019t recommend this on the road. That might be good for parking, but there\u2019s virtually no feedback at higher speeds, meaning the Kona Electric isn\u2019t a particularly exciting car to drive on a twisty B road.<\/p>\n

Officially, the Kona\u2019s 7.8-second 0-62mph time is just 0.1 seconds shy of the e:Ny1 and higher capacity battery version of the Kia EV3. However, the Kona Electric still feels more than lively enough for a car of this type, even if it has a long throttle pedal travel. We found the Kona Electric wasn\u2019t quite as eager to accelerate at higher motorway speeds as it was around town, but should you need to overtake a tractor on a B road, there\u2019s enough punch to do so reasonably quickly.<\/p>\n

The Hyundai is a little easier to drive smoothly than the Honda because the throttle has a softer initial response. The steering is light, and the brake regeneration has four strength levels, from complete coasting to strong deceleration; the ability to change these levels on the fly thanks to steering column-mounted paddles is a great feature. An adaptive mode adjusts the regen based on traffic and road conditions, but like most systems of this type, we found it unpredictable, so we preferred to turn it off.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
